GO STARS! |
| 7/2/2009 - The Fairfax Stars were born in 1997 and Aggie & Bob were set to coach the first ever U10 Girls team. There were a few nine year olds on that team who returned the following year on the U10 team and helped the Stars win their first AAU National Championship. One of the true U10 players on that team was a talented and tenacious player named Sarah Flanagan.
In the first year of the program, that team earned an invitation to the 10 & Under Girls AAU Division I National Championship tournament to be held in Orlando, Florida. In fact, it would be help at the brand new Disney's Wide World of Sports that had just opened that year. The opening ceremonies were held in the baseball stadium where the Atlanta Braves played their exhibition season games and in a memorable moment after the teams all marched in Olympic-style and gathered in the outfield, a group of doves were released to officially open the tournament.
While the team itself did not have a great tournament in terms of wins and losses, it was the beginning of a wonderful journey for the Fairfax Stars, and was driven by young players like Sarah Flanagan.
Sarah played again for Aggie and Bob two years later when the team pulled off a stunning upset in the Potomac Valley AAU Regional Championship tournament to earn an invitation to AAU Nationals in Springfield, Missouri. After going undefeated in pool play and advancing to the tournament championship bracket, the team ran into stiff competition and settled for finishing in the top 25 in the nation. It was a great tournament and a great time.
Sarah played her entire AAU career with the Fairfax Stars; enjoyed a stand-out career at West Springfield High School where she received numerous honors and awards; and went on to play college basketball for Mary Washington University, battling through a number of injuries, but continuing to provide leadership by example for her team. Many may not know that Sarah was also an accomplished soccer player. Sarah was inducted into the Fairfax Stars Hall of Fame in 2005.
A year out of college and into the workforce, Sarah is back on the court with the Fairfax Stars, providing the same leadership and tenacity that have marked her career. She is an assistant coach with the 2009 Fairfax Stars U14 Girls Gold Elite Travel team, an integral part of a talented coaching staff.
Bob called earlier this year to explore the possibility of Sarah's interest and availability to coach and join his coaching team. When she said yes, it was another magic moment, and is evidence of the lifetime relationships that grow through experiences like team sports...and certainly through the Fairfax Stars.
Sarah has brought a unique perspective to the court and her mentorship has been valuable as she has tried to help the players understand what it takes to compete at the travel level of basketball and beyond...at the high school and collegiate level of competition. As the season has evolved, she has become more assertive in helping the players recognize the need for commitment and dedication...during practice as well as games...and to their teammates and themselves.
Sarah Flanagan is a wonderful young women who led by example as a player and is now making a difference as she teaches and motivates young players to strive for excellence...both on and off the court! The circle of life has brought Sarah from the practices and games as a talented member of the very first Fairfax Stars U10 team to a role as a member of the coaching staff for a talented group of young student-athletes that will leave in about a week on their July journey of college exposure tournaments around the country. |
