Fairfax Stars 2015 Summer League Basketball- 19th Year- Most Popular in the DMV- DEADLINE 6/1

5/24/2015 -

The Fairfax Stars are pleased and proud to announce that registration is now open for the 2015 Fairfax Stars Summer Basketball League.  For the 19th consecutive year, the Fairfax Stars will host a recreational summer basketball league for boys and girls teams, ages 8 - 18, with a variety of competition levels.  What all of the participants have in common is the opportunity to participate in constructive recreational activity with adult supervision during the summer, a great opportunity to work on improving and expanding your game, great competition and lots of fun.

With more than 200 participating teams, the Fairfax Stars Summer Basketball League is widely recognized as the top summer recreational basketball league in the entire metropolitan Washington area.  A 10-game regular season schedule will be played primarily on Monday - Thursday evenings, with a few games on Friday nights.  The top 8 teams in each age group & division will participate in a single-elimination tournament.  Games begin the week of June 22nd and runs through July 23rd for the regular season.

What has contributed to the popularity of this league in addition to the great competition, is that with sufficient notice, we will work with coaches to address scheduling challenges to make it all work.  We have heard time and time again how much that matters for coaches, players, and parents.

This league will include divisions with County League ( Division I & II ); House League; AAU; CYO; Independent; and high school divisions including freshman; junior varsity; and varsity for boys and girls.  Please note your competition level when registering.

2015 Fairfax Stars Summer Basketball League

19 years ago, this League began as a dream for Aggie McCormick, with 20 teams on outside courts.  That dream has grown into an incredible activity for young people in our community.  Each game venue will have a Fairfax Stars Liaison & Gym Monitor.  Many of those are former Fairfax Stars players who participate as a summer job while home from college.  That is cool.

We want to express our ongoing gratitude to the Fairfax County Department of Recreation and Community Services as well as the Fairfax County Public Schools for their ongoing support of community-based, non-profit, volunteer organizations like the Fairfax Stars, providing constructive activities for the young student - athletes in our community.

Finally, we want to thank all of the teams, coaches, players, parents, families, friends, and fans that will participate over the 5 - 6 week summer season.

Good luck to all...have a blast!

Fairfax Stars U11 / 6th Grade Girls Claim Championship of 2015 YBOA 7th Grade National Qualifier

5/23/2015 -

This past weekend (May 16/17) the Fairfax Stars 6th Grade Girls Black participated in the YBOA National Qualifier in Chantilly, VA.  The 6th grade team played up in the 7th grade bracket and won the championship.  The Stars were able to go 2-0 in pool play by defeating the Reston Elite 39-34 and then the NOVA Suns 40-18.  They secured the championship by winning the finals 50-31.

In the first game the Stars had difficulty with the Reston's size as they started a 5'11, 6'1, and 6'3" players.  Using full court pressure and a solid man to man defense the Stars jumped out to an early 7 point lead.  Reston was able to close the gap several times and the lead stayed in the four to eight point range.  Strong play by Naja, Ruva, and Fiona in the post against Reston's front line kept the Stars in the lead.  Fiona hit several baseline jumpers that opened the paint area for us to work in.  After Reston tied the game in the 2nd quarter, Sophie Pavlech scored four straight points and Katrina Amos hit a shot to beat the halftime buzzer and give the Stars their 6 point lead back.  The game stayed at 6-10 points with strong guard play by Chalon Miles, Mack Koch, and Skylar Bibbee.  Reston went on a late run to close a 12 point lead to 4 before the Stars closed it out with a 5 point win.

In the second game the Stars jumped out early with strong play by Caitlin Blackman, Kat Amos, and Carley Rynex.  Ruva Kiara dominated the boards and finished inside.  As the lead grew the game became more and more physical as technical fouls were called on the opponents and their coaches.  In the end the Stars controlled play from tip to horn and won convincingly.

In the finals the Stars again matched up with the Reston Elite who worked their way through the opposite part of the draw.  The Stars were given a "walk over" into the finals.  The Stars were able to dominate the game from the outset and won 50-31 never leaving this game in doubt.  Once again the Reston size presented some problems in the paint and the Stars settled for jump shots.  After beginning to work the ball inside to Ruva and Naja Ngongba, the Stars started taking control of the game.  Strong play by Sophie Pavlech on the offensive glass (8 put back points) and aggressive play overall (12 points total) helped the Stars overcome the size advantage of Reston.  Mack, Carley, Skylar, Chalon, Caitlin, and Isabel Zamer all played great perimeter defense, hassled Reston in the press, and scored points to support the win.  Mackensie Andrews added four points on a strong baseline move and an elbow jumper as every player posted points in the win!

Fairfax Stars Proud To Continue NIKE Affiliate Partnership- Ten Years and Counting

5/23/2015 -

The Fairfax Stars are honored and continue to express gratitude for the 10 years of the extraordinary affiliate partnership with NIKE, and are excited about the growing relationship in the coming years and beyond of this prestigious affiliation.  NIKE has affiliate relationships with a limited number of AAU/Travel/Showcase basketball programs throughout the United States and the Fairfax Stars AAU/Travel basketball program is proud to be among the organizations selected for this prestigious collaboration.

http://nikegirlseybl.com/#home-1

For the 2014 season, Nike added a group of teams from around the country to create a Nike Girls Elite Youth Basketball League.  At various tournaments around the country, Nike teams competed in four divisions for an opportunity and seeding at the prestigious Nike Nationals Invitational at the end of July.

The 2015 season promises to be even more exciting as the Nike Girl's EYBL moves into the second year.

Accordingly, the Fairfax Stars U16 and U15 girls teams are looking forward to participating in the prestigious Nike Nationals to close the showcase season in July in North Augusta, South Carolina and play in front of more than 700 college coaches.

In addition, this relationship offers unique opportunities to Fairfax Stars student-athletes that will help improve their skill development and exposure to college coaches.

A NEW element that began with the 2010 season and going forward was the addition of U15 teams for a Junior Nike Nationals Invitational tournament at the end of the travel season, played concurrent with the Nike Nationals Invitational tournament.  Only 16 teams in America were invited to participate, and the Fairfax Stars were included.  It is exciting that the U16 Girls Premier Showcase team will be joined now each season by the U15 team for such a prestigious gathering of the best teams in the country, and more than 700 colleges coaches.

The Fairfax Stars are very proud to be one of the top programs in America to be invited to participate in the exclusive Nike Nationals Invitational elite tournament in July for the most outstanding women's travel basketball teams in the United States.  In 2006 the Stars advanced to the final of the Silver Division, playing in front of hundreds of college coaches.  In 2007, the Stars again advanced to the Silver Division championship bracket.  In 2008, the team did not advance, however, remained extremely competitive and received much attention from college coaches as they demonstrated their talent and skill.  In 2009, the Stars advanced to the Final Four of the tournament, falling in the Gold Bracket Championship semifinals, and Myisha Goodwin was named to the All Tournament 1st Team.  2010 was another terrific showing for the Fairfax Stars producing lots of attention from college coaches.

In 2011, the Stars went undefeated in pool play throughout summer and captured the programs first summer showcase championship by winning the Nike Summer Showcase in Chicago, Illinois. The Stars culminated the summer by advancing for the first time to the championship game of the Gold Bracket of Nike Nationals before finishing as the tournament runner-up. In North Augusta, Breyana Mason was named to the All-tournament 1st Team.

The 2012 tournament saw another strong showing as the Stars advanced to the Silver Bracket semifinals before completing their tournament run.  The U15 Girls advanced to the tournament quarterfinals after winning their pool and moving into bracket play.

At the 2013 tournament, the Stars had another outstanding performance as they advanced to the championship quarterfinals before falling to the eventual tournament champion in a game that went down to the final possession before being decided.

Many have identified Nike Nationals as "THE" tournament of the summer for women's basketball, with the best teams and All-Americans galore gathering to compete against the best.  The Fairfax Stars are extremely proud to be among those, and what a wonderful opportunity for Fairfax Stars student-athletes.

Additionally, in the three years from 2005 - 2007, the Fairfax Stars were represented at the annual Nike Skills Academy, an invitation-only skills camp that is limited to the top 20 women's basketball players in the country.  In 2005, Jasmine Thomas was invited, and at the 2006 Academy, both Jasmine Thomas and Chay Shegog were invited to participate.  In 2007, Chay was invited again to this prestigious event.  We have a number of candidates for the 2011 session.

Since 2009, the Nike Skills Academy has moved to a Regional model and the Stars continue to be well represented each year in the Mid Atlantic region.

After an extensive review and evaluation process, NIKE entered into an affiliate partnership with the Fairfax Stars AAU/Travel basketball organization in 2003.  Effective with the 2004 AAU Showcase season and since, the Fairfax Stars girl's program is proud of this affiliation.  The Fairfax Stars boys program is currently being evaluated and is a candidate to join this affiliate partnership in a future AAU/Travel basketball season.

As a result of this unique affiliate partnership, Fairfax Stars teams have participated in some of the most prestigious invitational basketball tournaments around the United States, providing an opportunity to showcase the extraordinary skill levels of the talented student-athletes who wear the Stars uniform.  As an example, in 2010, the Fairfax Stars U12 Girls National team won the Nike Midwest Showdown Tournament in Ohio, playing in the U13 Division.

Additionally, the Fairfax Stars will partner with NIKE and other NIKE-affiliated AAU basketball programs to conducts camps and clinics in an effort to increase skill levels and to provide enhanced visibility with college coaches on behalf of those student-athletes.

"We are very proud that NIKE has recognized and acknowledged the quality and dedication of the players, coaches and the adminstration of the Fairfax Stars AAU basketball organization and our sustained commitment to skill development as a fundamental foundation of this program's philosophy" stated Fairfax Stars Founder and Executive Director Aggie McCormick-Dix.  "This affiliate partnership will provide additional opportunities for Stars players to pursue their dream of playing college basketball if that is one of their goals" added McCormick-Dix.

"NIKE is recognized as one of the premier basketball organizations in the world, and this partnership is an acknowledgement of the commitment made by the organization since the beginning 18 years ago to offer an opportunity to young student-athletes in our community to participate in AAU/Showcase level basketball competition, both locally and nationally"
