Fairfax Stars Proud To Continue NIKE Affiliate Partnership! One of only 24 Programs Nationally!

3/7/2010 -

With tryouts now underway for the 2010 season, the Fairfax Stars are honored and continue to express gratitude for the 7th year of their extraordinary affiliate partnership with NIKE, and are excited about the growing relationship in year seven and beyond of this prestigious affiliation.  NIKE has affiliate relationships with only 20 - 24 other AAU/Travel basketball programs throughout the United States and the Fairfax Stars AAU/Travel basketball program is proud to be among the organizations selected for this prestigious collaboration.

NEW for 2010 is the addition of U15 teams for a Junior Nike Nationals Invitational tournament at the end of the travel season.  Only 16 teams in America will be invited to participate, and the Fairfax Stars are included.  It is exciting the U16 Girls Premier Showcase team will be joined now by the U15 team for such a prestigious gathering of the best teams in the country, and more than 500 colleges coaches.

The Fairfax Stars are very proud to be one of the top 24 programs in America to be invited to participate in the exclusive Nike Nationals Invitational elite tournament in July for the most outstanding women's travel basketball teams in the United States.  In 2006 the Stars advanced to the final of the Silver Division, playing in front of hundreds of college coaches.  In 2007, the Stars again advanced to the Silver Division championship bracket.  In 2008, the team did not advance, however, remained extremely competitive and received much attention from college coaches as they demonstrated their talent and skill.  In 2009, the Stars advanced to the Final Four of the tournament, falling in the Gold Bracket Championship semifinals, and Myisha Goodwin was named to the All Tournament 1st Team.

Many have identified Nike Nationals as "THE" tournament of the summer for women's basketball, with the best teams and All-Americans galore gathering to compete against the best.  The Fairfax Stars are extremely proud to be among those, and what a wonderful opportunity for Fairfax Stars student-athletes.

Additionally, in the three years from 2005 - 2007, the Fairfax Stars were represented at the annual Nike Skills Academy, an invitation-only skills camp that is limited to the top 20 women's basketball players in the country.  In 2005, Jasmine Thomas was invited, and at the 2006 Academy, both Jasmine Thomas and Chay Shegog were invited to participate.  In 2007, Chay was invited again to this prestigious event.

After an extensive review and evaluation process, NIKE entered into an affiliate partnership with the Fairfax Stars AAU/Travel basketball organization in 2003.  Effective with the 2004 AAU season and since, the Fairfax Stars girl's program is the only NIKE affiliate AAU/Travel basketball group in the Metropolitan Washington area, and is the only program between Hampton, Virginia and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on the east coast.  The Fairfax Stars boys program is currently being evaluated and is a candidate to join this affiliate partnership in a future AAU/Travel basketball season.

As a result of this unique affiliate partnership, Fairfax Stars teams have participated in some of the most prestigious invitational basketball tournaments around the United States, providing an opportunity to showcase the extraordinary skill levels of the talented student-athletes who wear the Stars uniform.  Additionally, the Fairfax Stars will partner with NIKE and other NIKE-affiliated AAU basketball programs to conducts camps and clinics in an effort to increase skill levels and to provide enhanced visibility with college coaches on behalf of those student-athletes.

"We are very proud that NIKE has recognized and acknowledged the quality and dedication of the players, coaches and the adminstration of the Fairfax Stars AAU basketball organization and our sustained commitment to skill development as a fundamental foundation of this program's philosophy" stated Fairfax Stars Founder and Executive Director Aggie McCormick-Dix.  "This affiliate partnership will provide additional opportunities for Stars players to pursue their dream of playing college basketball if that is one of their goals" added McCormick-Dix.

"NIKE is recognized as one of the premier basketball organizations in the world, and this partnership is an acknowledgement of the commitment made by the organization since the beginning 10 years ago to offer an opportunity to young student-athletes in our community to participate in AAU level basketball competition, both locally and nationally" said Stars Chairman Derrick Mashore.

If you have any questions, or require more information about the Fairfax Stars AAU basketball program, please contact via e-mail at fairfaxstars@aol.com .

3/7/2010 -

The Fairfax Stars are very proud to present the 2010 Summer Girls Basketball Skills Academy.  For the second year, the Fairfax Stars, under the leadership of Coach Carlecia Cobbins, are offering a skills academy for players that are not playing AAU basketball, but who aspire to compete for a spot on their high school basketball team.

This is a 6-week program beginning on June 1st, on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.  Space is limited, so please sign up early.

For more information and a registration form, please click here

A parent of players that participated last year offered the following...

Fairfax Stars Girls Basketball Skills Academy for 7-9th graders Feedback:

Coach Cobbins,
WOW! What a wonderful experience the Fairfax Stars Girls Basketball Skills Academy was that you and your team conducted. The building block approach for the skills development is right on the mark - you can see some of the girls improving right before your eyes. I could not wait to see what the girls look like at the end of the 6 weeks! My girls came home on cloud nine 9 with what they leaned and need to practice after their very 1st session.  I truly believe that all players need to have a basic understanding of basketball fundamentals in order to move towards playing at a higher competitive level and the Fairfax Stars Girls Basketball Skills Academy hit the mark. After completing the Skills Academy my daughter's credited you and your team with giving them the edge in making their High School team.

Thank you so much for all of your time, effort and energy to conduct a wonderful learning experience!

If you have any questions or request additional information, please contact Coach Cobbins at 703-786-7463 or via e-mail at ccobbins@gmail.com or the Fairfax Stars via e-mail at fairfaxstars@aol.com

Jasmine Thomas Leads Duke to ACC Title, Named Tournament MVP!

3/7/2010 -

Long-time Fairfax Star and Oakton High School standout Jasmine Thomas, a junior guard at Duke, led the Blue Devils on Sunday afternoon to the 2009 - 2010 ACC Women's Basketball Championship with a 70 - 60 victory over North Carolina State University.

Jasmine scored 18 points, grabbed 6 rebounds, and added 6 assists and 3 steals in 38 minutes to lead the 8th-ranked Duke to their first ACC Championship title since 2004.  With her continued leadership and manificent presence on the floor, Jasmine was named the tournament Most Valuable Player.

This talented student-athlete is also an Academic All-American and last week was named to the All-ACC team.  She is the epitome of one who "strives for excellence...both on and off the court!"

Jasmine played her entire AAU/Travel basketball career with the Fairfax Stars.  She is a member of the Fairfax Stars Hall of Fame and was honored with a special award in her name.  In 2003, she helped lead her team to the U13 AAU National Championship and two years later made it back to the championship game before comung up just short in the final.  Her team finished in the top five in the nation for four consecutive years.  She helped lead her team to the final of the Silver Division at the prestigious Nike Nationals Invitational tournament at the end of the season in 2006.

During her high school career, Jasmine earned numerous honors and awards.  She was the All Met Player of the Year and was the Virginia AAA Northern Region Player of the Year all four years of her high school career.  She was 1st team All State, and earned recognition as a McDonald's and Parade High School All American.  In 2007, she was named as the Most Valuable Player of the McDonald's High School All American game.  Later that year, she helped her USA Women's basketball team win the U19 Women's World Championship in Bratislava, Slovakia.

With all of the awards and honors, what separates Jasmine Thomas from so many...is that she is such a special young woman.  During her high school career, young aspiring players would line up and wait for her to come out of the locker room after a game.  She spent time with every one of them, signing autographs and just talking to them.  She has come back every year during the off season, and worked with young Fairfax Stars players who dream of playing college basketball.

Congratulations to Jasmine and her family on achieving yet another milestone in her career, that undoubtedly has many milestones yet to come.
