7/28/2010 -

Six years ago, Nike decided to sponsor a tournament at the end of the summer travel basketball season that would feature the top U16 showcase / travel teams in America.  The Fairfax Stars have been one of the teams invited every year to participate.  This year, in another new dimension, Nike has added a U15 Division.

The Fairfax Stars U16 Girls Nike Elite Premier Showcase team will be one of only 20 teams across America that will compete, with round robin pool play competition beginning on Wednesday morning.

The Fairfax Stars U15 Premier Showcase team will be one of only 16 teams from across the United States that were invited to participate.  They too will begin round robin pool play competition on Wednesday.

Last year, the Fairfax Stars U16 Girls Nike Elite Showcase team advanced to the semifinals of the Gold Bracket, a tremendous tournament for that talented group of student-athletes.

U12 Girls National Team Finishes 3rd at 2010 USJN U13 Girls National Championship

7/28/2010 -

Congratulations to the Fairfax Stars U12 Girls National team as they advanced to the semifinals and finished 3rd in the U13 Division at the 2010 U. S. Junior Nationals National Championship tournament.

The Stars won their pool with a 5 - 0 record including an intense and exciting victory over the U13 Minnesota Stars early Tuesday afternoon by a final score of 59 - 52.  It was a 2-point game with 39 seconds to play and the Stars closed the door and completed the win.  With that result, the Stars would qualify and advance to the tournament quarterfinals.

On Tuesday afternoon, with just two hours in between, the Stars would take on another undefeated pool play winner, Ring City Elite from New Jersey.  In another tough game that featured terrific athletic plays by both teams on both end of the floor, the Stars would take a slim lead into halftime.  In the second half, the Stars would open the lead and complete a strong 52 - 33 victory to move into the tournament semifinals.

Again, with just a bit more than an hour in between games, the Stars would meet the U13 Philadelphia Belles, with the winner earning a spot in the tournament championship game on Wednesday morning.

In an absolutely terrific basketball game, the two teams waged an amazing contest, going back and forth with never a lead of more than 5 points throughout the game.  At the end, down by 1 with just seconds to play, the Stars had to foul and send the Belles to the line for a 1 and 1 with just 10 seconds to play.  They converted both free throws to claim a hard fought 47 - 44 victory.

The Stars, playing up a year in the tournament, would claim 3rd, finishing the experience with a 6 - 1 record and defeating several of the top U13 Girls teams in the country.

The tournament brought to a close a wonderful season for this incredibly talented group of student-athletes.  From March through July, this team played a strong schedule and wrote several chapters of history along the way.  The team was undefeated for the season in its own age group, claiming the 2010 Potomac Valley AAU Division I Regional Championship and the 2010 12 & Under Girls AAU Division I National Championship in Rochester, Minnesota.  That National Championship made history as the 3rd consecutive AAU Division I National Championship, believed to be the first team to achieve such an incredible accomplishment.

In addition, the team went 40 - 4 against U13, U14, and U15 teams, including a strong performance in the U13 Division at the 2010 Nike Boo Williams Invitational tournament in April; bringing home the championship of the U13 Division at the 2010 Nike Midwest Showdown tournament in Ohio over Memorial Day weekend; and claiming 3rd at the 2010 U. S. Junior Nationals U13 Girls National Championship tournament.

Congratulations to  Taylor, Sharon, Kelly, Lindsey, Karlie, Lauren, Jessie, Raven, Marta, Leeah, and Stephanie on an amazing season.  Thank you to Coach Lauren for all of her assistance, being the first Fairfax Stars player to win an AAU National Championship as a player ( actually won three ) and now as an assistant coach.

Finally, thank you to the parents, families, friends, and fans of this team for your wonderful support throughout the season.

With the 2010 season now moving toward a close, the Fairfax Stars are honored and continue to express gratitude for the 7th year of their extraordinary affiliate partnership with NIKE, and are excited about the growing relationship in year seven and beyond of this prestigious affiliation.  NIKE has affiliate relationships with only 20 - 24 other AAU/Travel basketball programs throughout the United States and the Fairfax Stars AAU/Travel basketball program is proud to be among the organizations selected for this prestigious collaboration.

NEW for 2010 is the addition of U15 teams for a Junior Nike Nationals Invitational tournament at the end of the travel season.  Only 16 teams in America will be invited to participate, and the Fairfax Stars are included.  It is exciting the U16 Girls Premier Showcase team will be joined now by the U15 team for such a prestigious gathering of the best teams in the country, and more than 500 colleges coaches.

The Fairfax Stars are very proud to be one of the top 24 programs in America to be invited to participate in the exclusive Nike Nationals Invitational elite tournament in July for the most outstanding women's travel basketball teams in the United States.  In 2006 the Stars advanced to the final of the Silver Division, playing in front of hundreds of college coaches.  In 2007, the Stars again advanced to the Silver Division championship bracket.  In 2008, the team did not advance, however, remained extremely competitive and received much attention from college coaches as they demonstrated their talent and skill.  In 2009, the Stars advanced to the Final Four of the tournament, falling in the Gold Bracket Championship semifinals, and Myisha Goodwin was named to the All Tournament 1st Team.

Many have identified Nike Nationals as "THE" tournament of the summer for women's basketball, with the best teams and All-Americans galore gathering to compete against the best.  The Fairfax Stars are extremely proud to be among those, and what a wonderful opportunity for Fairfax Stars student-athletes.

Additionally, in the three years from 2005 - 2007, the Fairfax Stars were represented at the annual Nike Skills Academy, an invitation-only skills camp that is limited to the top 20 women's basketball players in the country.  In 2005, Jasmine Thomas was invited, and at the 2006 Academy, both Jasmine Thomas and Chay Shegog were invited to participate.  In 2007, Chay was invited again to this prestigious event.

After an extensive review and evaluation process, NIKE entered into an affiliate partnership with the Fairfax Stars AAU/Travel basketball organization in 2003.  Effective with the 2004 AAU season and since, the Fairfax Stars girl's program is the only NIKE affiliate AAU/Travel basketball group in the Metropolitan Washington area, and is the only program between Hampton, Virginia and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on the east coast.  The Fairfax Stars boys program is currently being evaluated and is a candidate to join this affiliate partnership in a future AAU/Travel basketball season.

As a result of this unique affiliate partnership, Fairfax Stars teams have participated in some of the most prestigious invitational basketball tournaments around the United States, providing an opportunity to showcase the extraordinary skill levels of the talented student-athletes who wear the Stars uniform.  Additionally, the Fairfax Stars will partner with NIKE and other NIKE-affiliated AAU basketball programs to conducts camps and clinics in an effort to increase skill levels and to provide enhanced visibility with college coaches on behalf of those student-athletes.

"We are very proud that NIKE has recognized and acknowledged the quality and dedication of the players, coaches and the adminstration of the Fairfax Stars AAU basketball organization and our sustained commitment to skill development as a fundamental foundation of this program's philosophy" stated Fairfax Stars Founder and Executive Director Aggie McCormick-Dix.  "This affiliate partnership will provide additional opportunities for Stars players to pursue their dream of playing college basketball if that is one of their goals" added McCormick-Dix.

"NIKE is recognized as one of the premier basketball organizations in the world, and this partnership is an acknowledgement of the commitment made by the organization since the beginning 10 years ago to offer an opportunity to young student-athletes in our community to participate in AAU level basketball competition, both locally and nationally" said Stars Chairman Derrick Mashore.
