Long-time Fairfax Star and St. John's College High School graduate Brittany Mitch has returned to the Fairfax Stars this summer as an assistant coach with the U15 Girls Premier Showcase team. Brittany graduated in 2010 from Lenoir Rhyne University.
Brittany Mitch provides another moving story of family, success, and striving for excellence...on and off the court. She tried out and was selected for the very first Fairfax Stars U10 Girls team in 1997. She was one of a group on 9 year olds selected for the team coached by Aggie McCormick and Bob Dix. In 1998, she was a key player on the U10 Girls team coached by Bob McCormick that won the 10 & Under Girls AAU National Championship at Disney's Wide World of Sports.
Brittany played her entire AAU / Travel basketball career with the Fairfax Stars and helped her teams win a total of 3 AAU Division I National Championships, never finishing lower than 3rd in the nation throughout her career.
Brittany was a two-sport star in high school at St. John's College High School where she played basketball and soccer. During her high school career, she received numerous honors and awards and was selected for All Met honors among her recognition. She decided to continue her education and accept a full basketball scholarship from Duke University.

Brittany was a key player for the Blue Devil women. She graduated early from Duke in December, 2008 with a Bachelors degree in Biology, Anatomy, and Anthropology.

With eligibility remaining, she enrolled at Lenoir Rhyne University to pursue her Masters degree. Lenoir Rhyne is an NCAA Division II school in North Carolina. Brittany had an immediate impact, starting 16 of 24 games, averaging 11.2 ppg and being selected for All Conference honors following her first season.

During her final season, Brittany started 28 or 29 games and averaged 12.6 ppg. She was named to the North Carolina All State 2nd team by the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association ( NCCSIA ). She graduated in May, 2010 with a Masters in Business Administration.
After graduating, Brittany reached out to Aggie, interested in coaching. She decided to join the coaching staff for the U15 Girls Premier Showcase team coached by Bob McCormick. She has been able to bring a broad range of experience and knowledge to help the players understand from a player's perspective what it takes to play at the highest level.
Brittany has always been an outstanding student-athlete throughout her academic career, and has further epitomized the meaning of the true student-athlete. Her achievements on the court have been outstanding, and she has always been not only a great player, but a great teammate.
Throughout her Fairfax Stars career, she worked hard with dogged determination and a desire to be successful. In 2005, she was inducted into the Fairfax Stars Hall of Fame.
Now she is bringing that same inspirational determination to bear for the young players she in coaching and mentoring. What a wonderful story of family and a continuing commitment to striving for excellence...both on and off the court. |
A huge CONGRATULATIONS to the Fairfax Stars U12 Girls National team as they defeated Arkansas Elite on Wednesday afternoon, July 7th, in an unbelievable basketball game, 63 - 60, to claim the 2010 U12 Girls AAU Division I National Championship!
In a total team effort, with every player contributing and some playing through injury, the Stars maintained their composure down the stretch to claim their 3rd consecutive AAU National Championship. We do not believe that any other team has won three consecutive AAU Division I championship titles.
The Stars also won the U10 and U11 AAU Division I National Championships.
The Stars went 7 - 0 during the tournament, which was played in Rochester, Minnesota.

Congratulations to Taylor Murray, Sharon Hull, Kelly Koshuta, Lindsey Abed, Karlie Cronin, Lauren Turner, Jessica Daguilh, Raven Lott, Marta Sniezek, Leeah Betourd, and Stephanie Jones. Also congrats to Head Coach Bob Dix and Assistant Coach Lauren Arthur.
Thank you to the parents, families, friends, and fans of this incredibly talented group of student-athletes for your outstanding enthusiasm and support throughout this exciting tournament.
The Stars improved their season-to-date record to 62 - 3, including 35 - 3 against older age group teams. They will conclude their 2010 season by participating in the 2010 U. S. Junior Nationals National Championship tournament in Washington, DC at the end of July, playing in the U13 National Championship.

In 1997 during the very first season of the Fairfax Stars AAU basketball program, she was just nine years old, with a huge smile, hustle, determination, and a sense of self during the tryouts for the U10 Girls team, coached by Aggie McCormick and Bob Dix.
She made that team and her winning attitude has been evident throughout her life and career to date, always striving for excellence...both on and off the court. During the 2010 season, Lauren Arthur has brought the same energy, determination, and big heart to helping teach young players on the Fairfax Stars U12 Girls National team, serving as an assistant coach and working with Head Coach Bob Dix.
In her second year with the Fairfax Stars U10 team, she helped her team win the 1998 10 & Under Girls AAU National Championship. During her 8 years playing for the Fairfax Stars, her teams won a total of 3 AAU National Championships ( 1998, 2001, 2003 ) and never finished lower than 3rd in the nation during that time.

She began her high school basketball career at Bishop Ireton, but moved to her home public school, West Potomac High School, where she received numerous honors and awards, including All District and All Region recognition.
The same grit and determination that she displayed as a younger player was even more evident as her basketball career blossomed. Lauren always understood how important it was to be a great teammate and she always took joy out of the great pass and the tough rebound, while making her team and teammates better.
She earned a full basketball scholarship to Division I Campbell University in North Carolina. The Fighting Camels compete in the Atlantic Sun Conference. At Campbell, Lauren earned the starting point guard role and played for four years, playing through injury at the end of her collegiate career. As in high school, Lauren was a great student in college...fully understanding the overall responsibilities of the student-athlete.

Lauren brought consistency to the court...both in performane and in attitude. She started 49 of 54 games during her junior and senior seasons. Playing basketball brought joy and the competition inspired achievement. That same inspiration, teamwork, skill, and determination were all trademark elements of her Fairfax Stars career as well. Lauren was inducted into the Fairfax Stars Hall of Fame in 2005.

Following graduation in 2009, Lauren entered the world of employment and continued to recovery and rehab from her basketball injury. She joined the hospitality industry and the Marriott Corporation.
Then Bob Dix called and said, hey, how about helping me coach. Lauren rejoined the Fairfax Stars as an assistant coach for the 2010 AAU / Travel basketball season, helping Coach Dix with U12 Girls...the defending back-to-back AAU National Champions as 10 & 11 year olds.
That big smile...the big heart...and the knowledge of having been there and done that...immediately established credibility with the players. Lauren has been able to teach the players about not only the skills of the game...but about competing at a high level...and being a great teammate.
Lauren knows full well that "striving for excellence...both on and off the court!" is not just about basketball...it is about life. She has been an instrumental part of preparing the U12 Girls for a transitional season that on July 7th produced the 3rd consecutive national championship for the talented group of very special student-athletes.

Lauren Arthur was right at home...
She is certainly the first Fairfax Star, but may be a rare case nationally of an individual that won three AAU National Championships as a player, and now has a 1st place medal as a coach. The Fairfax Stars are about family and Lauren Arthur is a lifetime member of the family. |
