CONGRATULATIONS to the Fairfax Stars U12 Girls Gold team as they won their 8th consecutive game to claim the championship of the Classic Bracket at the 2008 12 & Under Girls AAU Division I National Championship tournament in Rochester, Minnesota.
After falling into the loser's bracket on Monday night, meaning one more loss and their tournament experience would be over, the Stars reeled off wins on Tuesday ( 2 ), Wednesday ( 2 ), and Thursday ( 3 ), and then defeated the Michigan Shock, 63 - 55, to claim the Classic Bracket championship, and finishing 9 - 4 for the week.
After a slow start in the tournament, congrats on the determination and tenacity to get on a roll and finish off the week with a championship! GO STARS!

Hi Everyone, This will be my first web site posting!! I hope you enjoy it. As many of you know, I refuse to speak in online forums that are not positive in nature with regards to children…or anyone for that matter. This forum gives me the opportunity to speak, keep you informed, have many see and learn about the Fairfax Stars program, the game, and meet the "real" me. My other hope is that you get an opportunity to meet many thru my eyes. Everyone has a story, which so many of us never see in passing, and I am fortunate to have experienced so many great people and great young people sitting in my chair at the Stars program.
This week I thought I should address questions from others that have been posed to me, and then give my best wishes to our players and everyone's players who are packing suitcases getting ready for the exciting month of July, and a thank you to all that have dedicated their time and love to help with our endeavors.
For those of you who only know me in passing, I want to take a few minutes to introduce myself. My basketball career as a player and coach is written up on our web site, and done very well by my husband of 10 years this upcoming Thursday the 3rd. Bob does all of our web site work on his volunteer time and does a wonderful job. What isn't written on the site is my "real" life or full time life. I am not a basketball coach by profession. I do it in my spare time, whatever that means!!
I have a wonderful stepson, Ryan who is older that I would care to express!! Also, currently living in our home, a tiny Pomeranian named Max who just recently turned 1. I just celebrated my 45th birthday, which I am proud to say. The 40's are wonderful. I am an Interior Designer by trade. I owned my own Interior Design Business for 9 years. I opened my first business doors at the age of 26. I sold my first business and opened a retail store in Vienna on Maple Avenue which I closed 4 years ago. I continued my design work part time until 2 years ago. Since that time, I have worked full time as a 100% volunteer as the Executive Director of the Fairfax Stars. My husband and I make this program a priority in our life. We contribute with our time and our resources in hopes that we make some kind of positive difference.
I have been involved in many wonderful business organizations during my time of being an entrepreneur, which I am very proud to have been associated with over the years. To name a few, I was a Board member of the Fairfax County Chamber of Commerce for 4 years and in 1994-95, selected as their Citizen of the Year. I served in 1998 as the President of the Volunteer Center in Fairfax County and served on their board for 6 years. I also served on the Cancer Board for 4 years, Fairfax Chapter. I was the first and only elected Chairwoman of the Fairfax County Youth Basketball League ( FCYBL ) and also served on the Athletic Council of Fairfax County for 6 years. In saying all of that, I would love to say that I'm fortunate to have been able to work hard for years and retire young, but the Stars volunteer work is actually more hours than running my own business!! There is a difference…this is so much more rewarding to me. There is nothing like being able to give back, especially to children, when I have been blessed with so much in my life. I'm sure I will return to my trade, sooner rather than later and I do miss it, but this time with the Stars has been a wonderful.
Some of our Stars Boys and Girls teams have already left for AAU Nationals and some still to come. Our 8 year old boys start their Nationals today. I wish Coach Slater the best. The boys are a very good team and I hope they do well and enjoy the experience. Our 11 year old girls are at Nationals as I write this getting ready for their 7pm game in Bracket play. Congrats to them on advancing and our Coach Ray James. Our 12 year old girls leave tomorrow with big hopes and dreams. Mickey, you have done an outstanding job with these young women and I wish you the best. Ladies, good luck, have fun, and keep me updated. You should be proud of your accomplishments to date and all of your hard work. Our Travel Teams all leave this weekend for cities such as Las Vegas, Chicago, Memphis, Augusta, Hampton, New York, Phoenix and many more. We are fortunate that they are all healthy, doing well and ready to travel.
Our Girls Nike Elite Team is off to Hampton, then Chicago, then Tennessee and then finishing at Nike Nationals in Augusta, South Carolina. I am so proud of the girls. They have hung together and become an amazing basketball team. They are all very good players and even more important, great young women. Our Elite Coach, Mike Coughlan, who replaced Keith Lynch when he resigned, deserves my sincere thanks and admiration for the time, commitment, work and love he has put into this team. He is a very good coach and person. I am proud to have him as a part of our program. Keith Lynch also deserves my thanks and admiration. He is a wonderful man, coach and a dear friend of mine now and always.
I wish all of our Boys and Girls team the best going into the month of July. I hope that all of their dreams and wishes come true. Most of all, I hope they have fun!!! July is a great experience...one in which I will personally never forget in my lifetime.
I could not end this posting without thanking the amazing men and women that the program has volunteering their time to coach these young people all season. The time they dedicate, the knowledge they share, the commitment, and the love they share is priceless. "One hundred years from now, it will not matter what kind of car I drove, what kind of house I lived in, how much was in my bank account, nor what my clothes looked like. But the world may be a little better because I was important in the life of a child." I have a great respect for all of you, and you have my sincere thanks. You are all made of great character and integrity which should always be respected and cherished.
One last goodbye and good luck to all the players who just left for summer school. I already miss you but will see you again in August.
I have much more to say, more stories to share and many more to thank. I will pick up where I left off in my next posting which will be sooner rather than later.
Go Stars...
